Our Philosophy and Style

What’s written below are not just words; they are deeply embedded beliefs that we live by each day. If you do business with McLean Budden, this is what to expect.

A Philosophy Based on Balance

If there’s one word that sums up our investment philosophy, it is this: balance.

Yes, the basic objective of our investment management is to exceed client objectives. We are not, however, comfortable incurring unnecessary risk in an overzealous pursuit of this goal.

More specifically, our balance-based principles of investment are:
  • To add value in the management of each asset category
  • To add value and lessen volatility in asset mix management
  • To manage portfolios within the long-term risk/reward profile of each client

The phrase beneath our logo – Look Forward™ – these are not empty words - for we believe superior equity investing is, over time, the largest potential source of “added value” to a fund. Our equity management focuses on security selection to add most of the value. Companies with stable earnings growth, strong management teams and sound balance sheets are emphasized.

In other words, we look forward in our investment planning, so that you can look forward to good results.

Fixed income management emphasizes income generation, since stocks usually have a lower yield. Through moderate term to maturity and sector adjustments, bond portfolios are managed with an objective of outperforming selected benchmark indices while maintaining a low risk profile.

A Style Built Around Team Success

Our style begins with the concept of team, with all the other defining elements of our style flowing from the team’s delivery of them.

Through the strength of our deep, well-rounded teams, we are equipped to excel at:

  • Solid fundamental research
  • Equity management
  • Bond management
  • Asset Mix management
  • An active client service program that develops strong portfolio manager/client relationships

All of our research is conducted by small teams which build model portfolios for Canadian equities, U.S. equities, international equities, global equities, fixed income and asset mix. The decisions of each of these groups are then implemented according to the investment objectives of each client. Our portfolio managers stress the importance of regular meetings to ensure that we are constantly aware of client requirements.
